Definition of your project:
I have always thought it important for people to
observe the world around them. Once a person has begun to take notice of the
world, they will be able to think about it in their own way. Both my Research
Project and FMP are on the subject of Observation - 'Look around. Look up.'
My FMP will be a series of 8 bird prints of birds
of different sizes, in order from small to large. They will be of British
garden birds which most people will (hopefully) recognise and be able to
identify.
They will be decorative prints, which will commune
the simplicity of a bird form, in an abstract format, using overlapping colour
shapes and no line, which will contrast with the actual birds themselves. This
is partly to do with encouraging people to observe how the birds should look,
by showing them the unfamiliar, so they can become familiar with the real thing
by comparing the two (a deliberate contrast between abstracted form and reality).
Audience:
The prints will be for use in decorating an
interior space - bringing nature indoors. The prints will not be of large size,
so will not be a main feature, but will form part of the decor. I hope to make
them of a high-quality - in colour, style, and print paper. They will appeal to collectors of limited edition prints,
bird artists, bird watchers (twitchers), and/or people who own or have access
to their own space. The style will appeal more so to people with an artistic
sense, rather than a scientific one of birds, as the prints will be not be
photo-realistic. Age range - 18+ perhaps with a more 'modern' graphical taste
than a traditional art taste (painting etc.).
Justification of project:
I have always had an interest in travel, as a
child I had a fantastical imagination, and I was particularly drawn to things
that fly. I have partly chosen the idea of bird prints because I have an
interest in nature and animals of the natural world. Although I am not a
twitcher myself, I enjoy watching birds. I know that many others are interested
in flight/birds, and that birds are quite a favourite amongst people with an
interest in nature. I have to chosen to create prints because I want to create
something special - something that will be looked after, displayed, and
treasured. I have also chosen screen-printing because it gives the prints a home-made quality, and due to the nature of two-colour printing the alignment will be different every time, which makes every print unique.
The reason I have chosen to create the prints in
such a style is due to the change in my Illustrative taste. Originally I had a
liking for the very detailed work by artist's such as Arthur Rackham and
Alphonse Mucha. Although I still like these artists' work, I now prefer more
simple, graphical work similar to some of the artists referred to in one of my
later points.
